THE INTERVIEW

When did you start writing and what made you fall in love with it?

I have been writing since I was about six. And, since I also grew up reading novels, taking much enjoyment from it, I have felt a strong desire to write my own colorful and heartwarming stories from those vivid tales I grew up reading. I “fell in love” after I realized that writing was a calling. I feel so alive within these words, and such happiness in weaving my uplifting poetry and prose to share with others.

Who was your favorite childhood author?

My memories from the early decades are very vague, but I do remember longing to feel inspired by nineteenth century poets and writers, who were also momma’s favorites. Some of those were (just to name a few): Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, and Louisa May Alcott…we both loved “Little Women.” One Christmas, momma purchased a gold bounded edition of “Little Women,” that she read to me numerous times. So – I suppose I should say it is Louisa May Alcott.

What do you think makes good writing?

Sincerity, honesty, and raw, genuine beauty: anything that speaks to my heart.

How do you beat out your writers block?

I simply keep writing. Sometimes, just writing down the thoughts that cross your mind can assist in: “clearing the flood gates,” so to speak, and help you get back on track.

What is your favorite theme or element in writing?

Most of my own writing stems around historical, romantic fiction, and I heartedly enjoy both. I tend to sway towards passionate, emotional poetry as well. The absolute favorite part of writing for me is the rush one receives when the words flow – and as the stories are unfolding before us on the page.

How does a poem begin for you, with an idea, a form or an image?

Most of the time, images and words will come to me at a random moment – and I will record those words or images onto a notebook, and then expand them all into something beautifully poetic.

What are you trying to communicate with your writings?

What I dare say most writers anticipate conveying: their feelings, hopes, and desires. Sometimes our characters can speak out far more boldly than we can – and articulate the things we are fearful to express.

What kind of creative patterns, routines or rituals do you have?

The one true ritual that I have is in requiring music when I write. It helps inspire and motivate me – certain tunes – words – help me seek out my own. I also only really like to write in the early hours of the morning, when the rest of the world sleeps.

What is your favorite thing you've written?

I am torn between the novel I am currently working on, and these two poems:

Did DeviantArt help you as a writer, if so in what way?

Of course it has! There have been many deviants over the years that have offered me valuable insights, experiences, critiques and feedback on my writing. Several have also assisted in improving my editing skills, which are as equally important as concise, enjoyable writing on any skill level. Reading and sharing with other writers here has also been a blessing. I cannot even begin to thank those who have continued to inspire me with their outstanding poetry and prose. And, reading the exquisite words of others also helps me to appreciate the varyingly degrees of literary flair that several deviants possess here.

What book are you reading right now?

Currently, I am reading: “The Lincoln-Douglas Debates: The First Complete, Unexpurgated Text,” by Harold Holzer. Mr. Holzer is a brilliant Lincoln scholar and author, and a rare pleasure to read, for anyone looking for Lincoln related texts.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start writing?

To simply try, give it your heart, and to keep striving on to express what your heart feels. I have expressed this often, and will continue to do so: write and create your chosen art because it makes you happy, and brings you a sense of inner fulfillment – first and foremost. Always try and do what works best for you, and to stay true to what you are. Keep on writing because it uplifts and inspires you, because it can certainly make a difference in some way. If you feel that passion for writing within the depths of your soul, fight with everything you have to allow others to feel it, too.

Thank you so much LadyLincoln
